LAST year's finalists -- holders Bromley and Kibworth, from Leicestershire -- have reached the last eight of the Cockspur Cup, and they have not been joined by Henley, who could partly blame a fund-raising ball the previous night for their 54-run demise against Waltham in Essex.
======STOP SUMMARY=====
Henley, depleted by the effects of the ball and by minor county call-ups, reduced Waltham to three for three and then 53 for six, with Andrew White doing most of the early damage with 4-13. But Khawar Ali Kazmi and Atta ur Rehman rebuilt the Waltham innings with 91 for the seventh wicket.
Chad Keegan, the ex-Middlesex seam bowler, dismissed both batsmen with two overs of spin and the Waltham innings closed on 162 for eight. In in reply Henley struggled from the start against the bowling of former Pakistan seamer Atta ur Rehman (2-13) and Tanweer Sikandar (4-16) and were quickly 59 for eight and beyond recovery.
Waltham, who hire grounds in London and Essex for their home games, are affiliated to the Essex Sunday League, which provides cricket for their 2nd XI. Whether their cup players play league matches for any other clubs on Saturdays does not seem clear. Henley have been enjoying a revival in the Home Counties League, which they won in 2004.
Northern, from Liverpool, reached the sixth round for the first time last year and have gone one better, with a chance to avenge last year’s defeat at Kibworth. Only two other clubs, Swansea and the London club Malden Wanderers, had never reached this stage before and by a quirk of fate they clash in Wales on Aug 6.
